PADI Cavern Diver Specialty Course

The Cavern Diver Specialty Scuba Diving course is an introduction to cavern diving. It will develop the students skills, techniques and knowledge that are necessary to make cavern dives the safe way.

Cavern diving is defined as diving in the so called light-zone of a cave, that is the area where you can see natural light at all times. Diving beyond the light-zone is defined as Cave diving and is not contained in this course.

Course Overview

This Specialty Scuba diving course will give the student the knowledge and techniques of Cavern diving and describes the dangers involved with Cave diving. Cavern diving is in no way intended to provide instruction for Cave diving, which is beyond the level of recreational diving.

The student will first get the theoretical knowledge. After the classroom session there has to be finished 4 dives to get certified as a PADI Cavern Diver. During the first dive, you will practise the use of lines and reels and emergency procedures.

After the first dive of exercises outside the cavern environment, the final three dives will take place inside a cavern here in Bali, Indonesia. These 4 dives will be conducted in at least 2 diving days.

The following will be included in this specialty diving course:

  1. Planning, organisation procedures, techniques, problems and dangers of diving in a cavern;
  2. Setting up of the Scuba gear in the best possible way (e.g. position of hoses etc.);
  3. Special equipment necessary for cavern diving like lightning, guidelines, dive reel handeling and redundant breathing systems;
  4. Proper body positioning and buoyancy control, air-consumption management and emergency procedures;
  5. Information that describes specific hazards of Cavern diving like Silting, Line entanglement and line breakage. Disorientation from permanent lines and emergency situations unique to Cavern diving.

Prerequisites

  • Be a certified scuba diver at the level of PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or having an appropriate certification from another dive training organisation);
  • Minimum age of 18 years;
  • Evaluate and sign the PADI medical statement.

  • Recommended duration is 24 hours
