PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course

The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course in Bali will provide you the knowledge and understanding to Safely Scuba dive on a sunken ship-wreck, airplane wreck or automobile wreck. Although most wreck diving is done at shipwrecks, there is an increasing trend to sink retired ships to create artificial dive sites. This PADI specialty Scuba diving course does only cover penetration (entering) wreck diving in the "light zone" and within 40 metres (130 ft) from the surface (vertical and horizontal distances included).

Wreck diving enables divers to visit the past. Each wreck is considered a time capsule of history, waiting to be explored. Sport divers also make interesting finds while they explore remains of sunken vessels. These finds of artifacts enables the Scuba diving community to provide benefits to historians and archaeologists by giving them information for wreck identification and further analyzing and research.

Reasons for Wreck Diving

An underwater wreck can be attractive to divers for different reasons, some of these reasons are:

  • A wreck forms an artificial reef and creates a habitat for many different types of marine life and underwater creatures;
  • The structure of the ship itself has interesting parts and machinery to view closely;
  • A wreck often has an exciting or tragic history;
  • Wreck diving expands your a divers Scuba diving skills;
  • Older wrecks can be of value as an archaeological resource.

Safety in Wreck Diving

Wrecks may pose a variety of unique hazards and dangers compared to other Scuba diving disciplines. Many of the well preserved and attractive wrecks can be found in deeper water, which requiring Deep Diving skills. On some wrecks there can be fishing lines and nets entangled, so it is advisable to bring a diving knife during any wreck dive. To have a better view inside the visited wreck, bringing a diving light is also a good suggestion.

For penetrating the wreck (in the lightzone) during this specialty course, you will learn to apply reels and guidelines which will help you navigating inside the wreck when visibility is reduced due to stirred up sediments. Breathing gas management prior and during the dive will be of great importance to increase safety during wreck diving, and this is also included in this PADI specialty course.

Course Overview

During this Specialty Diving Course, you will built the knowledge and skills to become a Certified PADI Wreck Diver. The Wreck Diver Specialty Course is intended to be a safe, supervised introduction to Wreck Diving, with emphasis on fun and safety.

Contained in this course are the following:

  1. Planning, organisation, procedures, techniques of wreck diving;
  2. Identifying problems and hazards of wreck penetration diving, apply techniques and procedures required to minimize the hazards during limited-visibility wreck penetration diving;
  3. Plan and organise dives to explore underwater wrecks in the light zone and within 40 metres (130 ft) from the surface (vertical and horizontal distances included);
  4. Preparation and use of lights, air supplies and special equipment like penetration lines and reels.

Prerequisites

  • Participating divers needs to be certified as a PADI Adventure Diver / Advanced Open Water (or comparable certification from another dive training organisation).;
  • Have minimum age of 15 years;
  • Evaluate and sign the PADI medical statement.

The wreck dive that was conducted during the PADI Adventures in Diving program may be counted toward this specialty.
